Santiago, CHILE
Santiago is a city made for walking and eating. Except for the stifling
hours from 2 until 6 pm, we've been out exercising our feet and our mouths.
Chilean dishes seem to come in all shapes & sizes. So far, my favorite
is "lomo a lo pobre." This colossal was served to us our first night at
Bar Central. En ingles, it's a big fat steak served with two sunnyside
eggs on top and surrounded by crescent shaped heap of French fries. A
vegetarian's nightmare, a true cholesterol infusion. A close second, and
no less of a c-bomb is the "completo." That one you eat standing
up. I'll explain what it is and why next time...
We seem to have made the transition to the local schedule. Yesterday's
log: Woke at 9 am, breakfasted until 10:30, walked about town & visited
an exposition at the national library until 3 pm, ate lunch at a street-side
joint, back to the hotel for a siesta from 5 'til 6:30, assembled the
bikes in the basement of our hotel (no problems! :), took cold showers,
then out again for a metro ride to Bellavista, the bohemian part of town,
for a Spanish meal/beer/coffee at 11 pm, and finally a long, circuitous
walk home through a questionable part of town.
Not a bad day. Kinda liking this schedule. Consciously trying to self-indulge
for these first few days, knowing that the road south waits, and not with
as much hospitality or comfort. In other words, still subscribing to the
"get fat" part of the adventure prep program.
Enjoyed a mini adventure today trying to find the right kind of fuel
for our stove... Had about 7 different people trying to help us at different
times, including one guy who had us fire it up in the store, much to the
chagrin of el jefe, the manager. Had to clean the out lines after that
and on the second try got some stuff that will work.
Some background on a few of these photos... When we arrived in Santiago
we took a short siesta and then a walk. First thing we came to was Plaza
de la Constitution. Then caught some native music in Plaza de Armas. On
way back to hotel, we passed the steeple. Later, we found this chicacita
playing in the fountain by the Cathedral. Last shot is of Nicole standing
in front of our hotel.
That's it for our first report, or "chainlink" if you're not
afraid of corny metaphors...
Tomorrow will be our last day/night in Santiago. Friday morning we catch
a bus to Rancagua (86 km south) and start cycling south.
